Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer and it is caused by the prolonged
exposure to Asbestos. According to the latest research it has been
confirmed that Asbestos is also responsible for many other types of
cancers like gallbladder, kidney, throat and gastrointestinal cancer.
Mesothelioma cancer affects the mesothelium. Mesothelium is the membrane
lining of abdomen and lungs. Mesothelioma cancer is difficult to
diagnose. It takes 20 to 50 years to develop. The Western Australian
Institute for Medical Research is now doing research on the relation
between the ovarian cancer and the Asbestos. The exposure to asbestos is
more in males due to this the rate of mesothelioma disease is more in
males as compared to the females. In UK the removal of lung for the
treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma is abandoned. The treatment
of mesothelioma is a
combination of radiotherapy, surgery and
chemotherapy. There are many factors on which LINK DELETED depends such
as the location of cancer, the stage of cancer, age of the patient, how
far the cancer has spread etc. cytoreductive is a promising treatment.
Scientists researched for therapeutic targets in mesothelioma in the
study authored by the Chief of Thoracic surgery at Boston, Dr. David
Sugarbaker. In a research scientists found that knockdown of
ARHGDIA, COBLL1, and TM4SF1 resulted in doubling and even quadrupling of
the apoptosis in tumor cells. According to an estimate in U.S each year
3000 people are diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma. In New York at
Memorial Sloan-kettering cancer center, multi-modality therapy is
reviewed as the treatment for mesothelioma. There are two types of
therapies for the treatment of malignanat pleural mesothelioma patients.
One is Pleurectomy-decortication and the other is Extrapleural
pneumonectomy. In Pleurectomy-decortication, the diseased memebrane
lining is removed. It spares the lung. In Extrapleural pneumonectomy,
the lung is removed and also the diseased lining of heart, chest and a
portion of diaphragm. Different types of treatments and surgery is
combined by the doctors to deal with the aggressive asbestos cancer.
