Mesothelioma Treatment

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer and it is caused by the prolonged exposure to Asbestos. According to the latest research it has been confirmed that Asbestos is also responsible for many other types of cancers like gallbladder, kidney, throat and gastrointestinal cancer. Mesothelioma cancer affects the mesothelium. Mesothelium is the membrane lining of abdomen and lungs. Mesothelioma cancer is difficult to diagnose. It takes 20 to 50 years to develop. The Western Australian Institute for Medical Research is now doing research on the relation between the ovarian cancer and the Asbestos. The exposure to asbestos is more in males due to this the rate of mesothelioma disease is more in males as compared to the females. In UK the removal of lung for the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma is abandoned. The treatment of mesothelioma is a
combination of radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy. ARHGDIA, COBLL1, and TM4SF1 resulted in doubling and even quadrupling of the apoptosis in tumor cells. According to an estimate in U.S each year 3000 people are diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma. In New York at Memorial Sloan-kettering cancer center, multi-modality therapy is reviewed as the treatment for mesothelioma. There are two types of therapies for the treatment of malignanat pleural mesothelioma patients. One is Pleurectomy-decortication and the other is Extrapleural pneumonectomy. In Pleurectomy-decortication, the diseased memebrane lining is removed. It spares the lung. In Extrapleural pneumonectomy, the lung is removed and also the diseased lining of heart, chest and a portion of diaphragm. Different types of treatments and surgery is combined by the doctors to deal with the aggressive asbestos cancer.
